These are five key things to know about refrigerating wine: Refrigeration in Riverhead, Westhampton, Smithtown, Hamptons, Southampton

  • Temperature Control is Critical:

Wine should be stored and refrigerated at a consistent temperature. The ideal temperature for most wines is between 45-65°F (7-18°C). Red wines generally do well at the higher end of this range, while white wines and sparkling wines are often better stored at the lower end. Fluctuations in temperature can cause the wine to age prematurely and affect its taste and aroma.

  • Avoid Rapid Temperature Changes:

Rapid temperature changes can be harmful to wine. It’s important to avoid exposing wine to sudden temperature fluctuations, as this can cause the wine to expand and contract, leading to oxidation and potential spoilage. Gradual changes are generally less harmful, so try to avoid moving wine quickly from a warm environment to a cold one or vice versa.

  • Humidity Matters:

While refrigeration is essential, the humidity level in the storage environment also plays a role. Low humidity can dry out corks, potentially allowing air to enter the bottle and spoil the wine. Aim for a humidity level of around 70% to keep corks moist and maintain the wine’s quality. Wine refrigerators often provide a controlled environment with the appropriate humidity levels.

  • Store Bottles Horizontally:

Storing wine bottles horizontally is crucial, especially for cork-sealed bottles. This position keeps the cork in contact with the wine, preventing it from drying out. A dried-out cork can allow air to enter the bottle, leading to oxidation and spoilage. For screw-capped bottles or those with alternative closures, horizontal storage is still recommended to ensure the wine remains in contact with the closure, preventing potential oxidation.

  • Chilling Times for Serving:

If you’re refrigerating wine for serving, be mindful of the recommended chilling times. Different types of wine require different serving temperatures. For example, light white wines and sparkling wines generally benefit from about 2 hours in the refrigerator, while full-bodied whites and lighter reds may need around 30 minutes. You can also use a wine thermometer to check and ensure the wine reaches the desired serving temperature.

By paying attention to these factors, you can ensure that your wine is stored and refrigerated properly, preserving its flavor, aroma, and overall quality. You can call us without any hesitation.
